The differences between the American film production process and the British Production process is very different. One of the biggest differences between british with american films is the budget the difference can be massive. Americans sometimes use up to $500,000,000 for their films. with this type of money [dollar dollar] available, they can have lots of special effects, big directors, and very famous actors/actresses.
British films tend to have a massive lack of funds in comparison to this. One of my favourite films, starring Simon Pegg, Shaun Of The Dead had a budget of £2.5 million, when compared to films in America that have budgets of £20 million, ten times that amount, it's really not a lot. With the american films they would struggle to even manage to get one actor for £2.5 million, if he or she was going to be the lead actor/actress.
Linking to this point about the cost for the big actors for the films, is the fact that more and more people don't even bother to watch some of the british films due to their lack of big hollywood stars, with a estimated 90% of the population apparently being 'mainstream' meaning, they won't even bother seeing a film if it doesn't have a hugely famous actor in.
For obvious reasons, most of the american films go down very well in terms of reviews and box offices. The fact that the bdget for them is far superior is probably the key one, as with a huge budget, huge actors, being an american film, you're going to have a mass appeal, with loads of people wanting to go and see it. They also have so much money, they can easily afford to advertise the films properly, with huge posters, websites, trailers and they can afford to send their film to for example, the Oscars to be reviewed to try and gain it extra recognition. This is a great contrast to the film Moon. Moon is a british film, that had a tiny budget. Despite winning awards, it never got nominated for an Oscar, as they simply didn't have the money to send them a copy of the DVD. The film was also very poorly advertised so not many people heard anything about it.
Therefore, overall i would definately say that they key difference between british and american is the fact that they have such varying budgets. The budget of a film can be the make or break of it, big actors, and a big director can often lead to great success and a lot of profits. On the other hand, some films can go totally in the wrong direction, due to lack of funds and often can make a loss. I feel that american often have the better films, simply because they can afford to buy the things that make films the best.

ReplyDeleteHaving read Eleanor's essay in class you'll know already that this is too light on examples. You'll need to use all the information we've learnt about Moon (and subsequently Kick Ass) to help improve your work.
It's worth considering how important you feel money is towards a films success and why it is that British producers don't back our films.
