Straight away from the official film poster we can see that the lead star is Sam Rockwell, this instantly shows that the film perhaps doesn't have such a big budget as their leading actor is not so well known. This would attract some people as despite being comedy actor by trade, he has also stared in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' which obviously has sci-fi links to it. The film is also obviously not a four quadrant film, as it would generally only appeal to people who enjoy watching sci-fi films.

However, sci-fi lovers who are all about big special effects wouldn't really be attracted to the film as when watching it, it's quite clear that there hasn't been a lot of money at all for the film, 2.5Million pounds to be exact, so there was hardly any money for special effects. This becomes, in my eyes, very apparent when watching the film and Sam begins to drive his truck, you can quite clearly see that it is infact just a toy car that is moving.

The film has a certificate of a 15 so it immediately rules out the younger generation, and shows that the target audience of a more mature age. The director of the film is Duncan Jones this would immediatley make the film be to more of a sci-fi audience, he brought people into the film that have done special effects for various different big sci-fi films. As it was a film that was pretty much the director's first a few people were interested in it straight away.

The budget was also tiny. They couldn't afford to properly advertise the film, the only way people got wind of it was him talking at Sci-Fi functions and then relying on word of mouth to spread the word. Duncan Jones did also talk to NASA about how believable the film was and how it appealed to a wide range or audiences. He also couldn't afford decent special effects and the biggest cost of special effects was when he was playing table tennis with himself and the scene lasted only about 5 seconds, all the other time he used a double.

  1. Much better Lamby.

Can you try and expain why Duncan Jones being director would attract a more sci fi audience though as I'm not sure that point can be supported.

Try to also give a few more specific examples from the film where the budget had an impact on what could and could not be filmed (think about table tennis, the fight sequence, repeated CGI sequences when the pod is launched etc)

Well done for including The Flaming Lips on your mixpod, this is their best track
