how ethnicity is represented

In Hotel Babylon, the episode 'immigration raid' we see how one of the coloured characters is bossed around. The white, female charater is shown bossing him around ordering him to go and do something she has previously told him to do. Also, when he leaves, she makes a comment to some other white people saying he has 'a brain like a sieve'. The fact that not only is the character ordering the black person around white, which is showing a racial divide as if the white people are superior, the fact that it is a women aswell, also shows that the black man really doesn't have a high place.

We are also shown where all of the illegal workers are given a code to go and hide, as their is an immigration raid. This whole scene is very belittiling of them, and makes them out as if they are worthless, almost as if they are are animals in the way they are treated. The camera angles also make them look powerless as they are all crammed in one little room and the camera angle is looking down on to them. When the camera is on the white people, it is at eye level or looking up at them showing they have more power.

  1. Your comments are spot-on. The still image from the programme is great, as it demonstrates binary oppositions in Hotel Babylon very nicely.
