Film 4

1. What is Film4's remit [its reason and purpose for being]?
The public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality
and diverse programming which, in particular –

demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society,  makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
exhibits a distinctive character.

2. What types of films are green-lighted by Film4? Give examples of films and genres:

They have produced lots of todays big films, some alone and some in co-production with others;

127 Hours was done by film 4 productions, however also co-produced with Pathé, Fox Searchlight Pictures, HandMade Films International and Warner Bros. Pictures.

They tend to get involved with a range of genres, with Borat & Shaun Of The Dead being comedys, however films such as 127 hours are action/adventure.

3. Why is Tessa Ross regarded as "the mother of British film-making" and therefore instrumental for Film4's success?

Tessa Ross, now 47, has become like a mother figure to Britain's film industry. This is because of the way she nurtures new talent and nursing more established directors who might be feeling unloved into her films. She says she is not uncomfortable with being seen in a maternal role. "I'd like that, I think that's the right way, isn't it?" she says. "It's all about nurturing.''

4. How much is Film4's yearly budget and how much of it did "Slumdog Millionaire take up? ( Be careful with this one as co-productions, UK Lottery money and deals with Pathe, etc. helps make Film4's budget stretch further!)

Channel 4 are now increasing Film Four's budget by 50% to 15 million pounds. Slumdog Millionaire took up the majority if film four's budget costing them around £8,000,000 pounds.

5. Why does Film4 form partnerships with other companies/individuals?

They form partnerships with other companies/individuals for a couple of reasons. One of the main reasons would be so that they can get more money for their productions; they share the cost. Furthermore, if they are in a project with another company, and the film turns out to be a dissappointment they can share responsibility, and they won't of put all of their money into the film.7. What problems did Film Four face in the naughties?

6. What is the future for Film4 - budget and film-wise?

The future of Film4 seems very bright and this current moment in time. They are getting more funds allocated to them by Channel 4 with a 50% increase.Tessa Ross has turned Film4 around from when she took charge about 6 years ago. Film wise, they are doing more cross productions with Pathe, and they are making more and more films that are now, not just hitting their own channel, but now more and more of their films are making it into the cinema, getting more viewings, and more DVD sales.

2001 turned out to be rather a problematic year for Film Four. Charlotte Gray contributed to a £5.7 million loss as it was one of the most expensive films thay had made and it was a box office flop. Ever since it has become remembered for causing major financial problems at Film four however the problems were more deepseated than that. In 2001, Film Four put out 14 films, but its releases accounted for just 0.7% of the UK box office market. Due toFilm4 tried to get people to buy their channel, for £5 a month it took a massive hit and it was estimated that only 300,000 people were subscribed to it.  In 2006 it was announced that they were doing really badly, and that they had decided to relaunch the channel as a free service. They would show programmes that generally had been produced by Film4 productions on freeview.
