First of all, TRON Night: This was an IMAX 3D experience happening on October 28th. Select 3D and IMAX 3D theaters worldwide played a 20 minute sneak peek of Disney’s “TRON: Legacy.” The event was sponsored by Asus Computer International. Ticket sales opened earlier than expected for midnight screenings of “TRON Legacy” in IMAX 3D theaters.
Disney also did a 'TRON Tuesdays'; For every Tuesday leading up to the release of the movie, starting on December 17th, exclusive new video content, including behind-the-scenes clips, trailers and artwork, will be released on the web. Disney tried to make as much of a big deal about Daft Punk doing the soundtrack, they officially released the track on December the 7th.
There was lots of official TRON products produced, including tech gadgets, clothing and Disney did their usual trick of the toys. Disney even attempted to get some more sales through making a TRON Evolution video game, based on the “TRON: Legacy” movie, like the soundtrack, it was released on December 7th. ElecTRONica: a nighttime street event at Disney California Adventure to celebrate “TRON Legacy was also put on, and even after all of this Oakley released an official TRON pair of 3D glasses, costing no less than $150.
To a more local audience, they released film posters, however, they released various different posters, depending on who their target audience was. They also sent an animated GIF that showed CSS code lines. Four of them were put together and part of the code was cracked, revealing the URL to Flynnlives.com, a site maintained by activists who believe Kevin Flynn is alive, even though he's been missing since 1989. Clicking on a tiny spider in the lower section of the main page led to a countdown clock that hit zero on July 23, 2009, 9:30 pm PDT. An address was found. It lies in San Diego, California, USA near the city's convention center where the Comic Con 2009 took place and some footage and information on the sequel was released.
Disney really tried to show off the amount of different ways they were showing the film, the film was presented in IMAX 3D and, of course, Disney Digital 3D. The film was also released with D-BOX motion code in select theaters, this would of cost them a a fortune, as they would of had to program the chair with the whole film. the and released in 50 Iosono-enhanced cinemas, creating "3D sound". Disney also attempted to show off slightly, creating a digital avatar of Jeff Bridges. The film was the first film to super impose a fully digital avatar upon an actors body, in order to create a younger version of the character. In TRON'S case Jeff Bridges had the youthful make-over, thanks to Digital Domain‘s Emotion Capture technology. Bridges became the first actor to appear alongside a younger version of himself.
Daft Punk did the soundtrack for the film, this got lots of people discussing the film even more, with their name on it, people were intrigued to listen, and therefore watch the film. Daft Punk even got third billing on the trailer, after the title and the fact that the movie's in 3D. They even got their own promo poster. With many people believing that a lot of people were just going to see the film, just because Daft Punk were doing the soundtrack, and not because they were that interested in TRON. Disney were criticized by numerous people for having Daft Punk, as it seems that they've spent an awful lot of money, getting Daft Punk in, when really, it's not done them too much except get them recognition from Daft Punk fans.
